Margaret Halliwell of Kearny
She was a lady to be admired. On October 12, 2016, Margaret (“Marge”) Halliwell (née Smith) passed peacefully with her children at her side. Her children – Bonnie Dawn Watson of Kearny, Gary Robert Halliwell and his wife Mary of Mt. Olive, her grandchildren – Daniel Watson and his wife Karen, and Melissa Watson and her fiancé Jason Wood, and her great-grandchildren – Ryan, Hailey, Casey, Paige, Kyle and Kaitlyn will cherish the love and caring that Marge always lavished upon them.
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland on June 5, 1926 to Mary and William Smith, Marge was the younger of two children. On August 9, 1947 she married Robert “Chick” Halliwell, and they enjoyed 52 years together before his death in 1999.
A life-long resident of Kearny, NJ, Marge loved to help people in her work at both Joel Harrison Insurance and at Kearny Federal Savings Bank. She took great pride in working with her customers and ultimately putting a smile on their faces. For Marge, just doing that was a good day!
Having come to the US at the age of 10-months, Marge always held tightly to her Scottish heritage. She loved to regale her family with stories of her relatives and ancestors, often singing Scottish ditties and quoting her favorite poet Robert Burns.
A member of the Order of the Eastern Star of NJ, Marge endowed her family with love, joy, and kindness. Her gift of confidence and caring will serve them well as they remember the exceptionally strong mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and guide they have lost.
Remembrance of Margaret Halliwell will be held at the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ, on October 16 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home on Monday, October 17 and then entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
