Profile:

Helen Miterko

Helen was born in Jersey City, N.J. and was part of what Tom Brokaw referred to as "The Greatest Generation.”  Like those around her, the aftermath of the Great Depression and the coming of the second World War made it a difficult time to grow up.  Close family ties to her mother Mary and her brothers John and Steve turned the hard times to beautiful memories.  Helen’s contribution to overcoming her family’s hardship included her work as seamstress in NYC.

As Helen grew into a young woman, she met and married Pete, a handsome young soldier recently returned from the war in Europe.  They started a family with a baby girl, Elaine, and baby boy, Peter Andrew.

Helen and her family lived in the town of Kearny, N.J.   Here she raised her children and kept a lovely home.  After 50 years in the town and house she loved, Helen took up residence in Little Egg Harbor.  Here she became active in church and senior activities while still volunteering her time at the Southern Ocean County Hospital gift shop.

Helen resided at Seacrest Village, where she made many new friends.  She enjoyed flower arranging and surprise visits from her family, especially those from her grandsons.  Helen’s eyes become the brightest when her great-grandchildren walk into her room for hugs and kisses.
