Helen Mitchell Bloomer, 97, fell asleep in the Lord on Friday, April 3, 2020.
Helen (Eleni) was born on June 5, 1922 in Newark, NJ. Devoted wife for 25 years to the late Henry White Bloomer, Deputy Chief of Police in Kearny, NJ, and loving daughter of the late William (Mihalakakos) and Dimitra (Goulakos) Mitchell who emigrated from the southeastern region of the Peloponnese from the villages of Himara and Kotrona in Laconia, Greece. She was the fifth of seven brothers and sisters, who predeceased her: Katherine, Polly, Theodore, Peter, Michael and Joan. Helen had no children, but her devoted and loving nephew Robert was like a son to her.
Helen graduated West Side High School's Class of 1941 and went on to graduate from New Jersey State Teacher's College. She worked on the assembly line making gauges for planes at Westinghouse in Newark, NJ during WWII and later in their offices for 14 years and also served as Den Mother for Pack #380 of the Boy Scouts of America.
Some of Helen’s many passions were cooking, singing, and spending summers at the beach with her husband, nieces and nephews of both the Mitchell and the Bloomer families at her second home in Lavallette, NJ. One of Helen’s greatest joys was spending time with and caring for her two granddaughters, Eleni and Efthimia, who so deeply loved, honored and adored their Yiayia Helen throughout her final days.
Helen is survived by her many loving nieces and nephews on both the Mitchell and Bloomer sides. She will be forever remembered by those who knew and loved her as a quiet, kind, compassionate, generous person with insightful wisdom. May her Memory be Eternal.
Due to the current restrictions, funeral services are private, in the care of the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home.
