Athanasios Manolis passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, October 18th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and hard work. He was born in Perista, Nafpaktos, Greece, on September 13, 1948, and spent his childhood in Thessaloniki. He proudly served in the Greek military for two and a half years, demonstrating his dedication, sense of duty, and love for his country. In 1971, Athanasios immigrated to America, where he worked in various restaurants and ultimately fulfilled his dream of opening his own lunch truck, Sunlight Snack Bar, in Newark, NJ, in 1991.
Athanasios was a kind-hearted soul whose love for life was most evident when he danced, radiating joy and bringing people together. He had a special affection for his Corvette, often reminiscing about the long drives he took across the country. He also found excitement in the thrill of his lottery tickets, dreaming of what might be. Athanasios was a passionate supporter of European soccer and never missed a chance to cheer for his favorite teams, especially Greece. His selflessness was unparalleled, as he consistently prioritized the needs of his family, making countless sacrifices to ensure their happiness and well-being. With a heart full of love and generosity, he touched the lives of everyone around him.
He is predeceased by his parents, Christos and Spyridula Manolis, his brother, Nikos Manolis, and his nephew, Christos Manolis.
Athanasios is survived by his beloved wife, Ekaterini Manolis (née Batsaouras) and their three children and their spouses: Roula and Zach Brebner, Eleni and Keith Bruno, and Christos and Brianne Manolis. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Elliana Irini Brebner and Georgia Sherry Manolis as well as his nephew, Makis Manolis, and Makis's son, Aggelos Manolis. In addition, Athanasios is survived by loving relatives on his wife’s side, who mourn his passing and hold dear the memories shared with him.
His memory will forever be treasured by all who knew him, a reminder of a life lived with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family.
Visiting will be on Thursday October 24 from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Armitage Wiggins Funeral Home 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ. Mass will be the following morning in Ss. Nicholas, Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
