JULIE ANNE (BORYS) LUTY – Julie A. Luty, 75, died October 21, 2024, at Daughters of Israel nursing home in West Orange, NJ.
Julie was born October 1, 1949, in Boulder, Colorado, the second child and second daughter to father Julius Borys and Mother Mabel Eileen (Monaghan) Borys.
She spent her childhood in the New Jersey suburbs of Iselin and Kearny, NJ, where she lived with her family until 1999. She also lived with her family in Warren, Plainfield, Jersey City and Bayonne NJ.
Athletic and academically inclined, Julie graduated from Kearny High School, in Kearny, NJ in 1967. Following graduation, she majored in Physical Education at Glassboro, now Rowan University, in southern NJ. Julie was an avid swimmer and accomplished collegiate and competitive synchronized swimmer. Graduating in 1971, she went on to teach physical and health education for the next 30 years.
Julie met her husband James ‘Jim’ Luty on a blind date while both in college – Jim at Rutgers and Julie at Glassboro State University. They married on June 5, 1971, then moved up to Boston, Massachusetts for Jim to attend graduate school at Harvard University, and Julie to begin her career with her first professional Physical Education teaching role, at Bedford High School in Bedford, MA –where she met lifelong friends and began her long tenure in coaching girls basketball and softball. Teaching mostly high schools aged students, her career spanned multiple grade levels, for over 30 years in Massachusetts and New Jersey, retiring in 2010 from the Plainfield, NJ school system. She was passionate about helping young women in need, inspiring youth by coaching sports teams and enjoyed hosting parties and cooking amazing meals for family and friends.
Julie and her beloved husband Jim (1948 – 2021) were very happily married for just shy of 50 years.
Julie (and Jim are) survived by their 3 children and 5 granddaughters: eldest, daughter Beth (Luty) Waldman of Overland Park, KS - spouse Michael and daughters Gwen and Eve; son James ‘Jay’ Bryan Luty of Rosyln Heights NY, spouse Winifred and daughters Annabelle and Valerie; and daughter Sara Eileen (Luty) Tesoriero, spouse Christina, and daughter Elle James, of Metuchen, NJ.
A wake will be held at Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home in Kearny, NJ, on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 4 - 8pm EST. At 11am Saturday, October 26, Julie’s family will also host a memorial funeral service at Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home.
