Dr. Rita Mañas: December 6, 1951 – September 2, 2024
Dr. Rita Mañas, a beloved educator and cherished family matriarch, passed away on September 2, 2024. Born in Newark, NJ, to John and Sofie Mañas, Rita was the youngest of six children. She shared a deeply special bond with her mother, whom she lovingly cared for until her passing. Her nurturing spirit extended to everyone she met, marked by unwavering support, love, and admiration.
Rita’s distinguished career was marked by degrees from Kean University (BA), Seton Hall University (MA), and Rutgers University (PhD). Her impactful roles included serving as Educational Counselor at Aspira, Student Development Specialist at Seton Hall University, and Director of EOF programs at Fairleigh Dickinson University, William Paterson University, and Centenary College. Most recently, she taught Spanish at Barringer High School, where she was awarded for her remarkable achievement of having all her high school students pass the Advanced Placement exam for Spanish for several years in a row. She had previously taught at University High School in Newark.
Rita was also an avid reader, a dedicated member of the “ChaChas” book club, loved crocheting, music, travel, and a passionate animal lover. She had two beloved poodles, Ito and Miko, who brought her immense joy. Proud of her Puerto Rican heritage, she embraced her roots with joy and enthusiasm.
Rita is survived by her four siblings, as well as several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Her warmth, love, and commitment to education were evident in all she did, whether guiding her loved ones, celebrating special occasions, or simply being a fun and engaging presence.
Her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her will forever cherish the profound impact she made through her boundless love, guidance, and grace. Rita’s legacy will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 10th from 3:00-8:00 pm at the Armitage Wiggins Funeral Home - 596 Belgrove Drive Kearny. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at 10:00 am in St. Peter’s Church in Belleville. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery with follow.
