Alastair M. Stewart Jr.

Alastair M. Stewart Jr., 68, of Kearny, NJ, passed away on January 28th. 

Born and raised in Kearny, NJ, Alastair was a proud steward of his family's legacy. He owned and operated Stewart's Scottish Market, a cherished local establishment that has been family-owned since 1931. His dedication to the market reflected his deep connection to both his heritage and his community, where he was known for his warm spirit, hard work, and friendly demeanor. 

Alastair honorably served in the American Air Force from 1979 to 1983, during which time he trained at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and was then stationed at RAF Lakenheath Air Force Base in England for four years. His service reflected his strong sense of duty and commitment to his country. 

Alastair's greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his wife, Millyne Teixeira Stewart, and her two children, Aleska and John, as well as Aleska's two children, who brought joy and companionship to his life. Additionally, he is survived by his only beloved daughter, Nicola Stewart Atieh, who brought immense pride and happiness to his life, and his son-in-law, Dan Atieh. He was a proud grandfather to his two cherished granddaughters, Aislynn and Rilynn. He also leaves behind his loving siblings, Deborah Levittino, Judith Wax, Patricia S. Adams (Stuart) and Edward Stewart (Michele), who will forever cherish the memories they shared together.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alastair will be remembered for his kindness, his strong sense of family, and his unwavering commitment to the community he served for so many years. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, located at 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ 07032. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love he gave so freely in life. 

The Stewart family remains dedicated to honoring Alastair’s legacy by continuing to operate Stewart's Scottish Market. As long as its devoted patrons continue to enjoy our homemade food, we will proudly keep the doors open, preserving the traditions and flavors that have made the market a beloved institution since 1931.
