Carlos Chaves, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and proud Portuguese immigrant, passed away on September 5, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born and raised in Portugal, Carlos came to the United States with the courage to leave behind the country and life he knew in pursuit of something better. He arrived with little more than determination, a willingness to work, and the belief that through sacrifice and perseverance he could build a better life for the family he hoped to have.
And that is exactly what he did.
He built a new life in America, raised a family, and became the proud father of two sons. He worked tirelessly throughout his life by providing for his family. That was simply what he believed a husband and father was supposed to do. His work ethic was extraordinary, and the sacrifices he made gave his sons opportunities that would have been difficult to imagine when he first left Portugal.
His journey from Portugal to America became, in many ways, the story of his family: one generation sacrificing so that the next generation could go further.
But those who knew Carlos will remember much more than how hard he worked. They will remember his immediate desire to help anyone, namely all his family members.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Conceicao, his sons, Paul and Anthony, daughter-in-law, Roxanne; his grandchildren, Samantha, Kevin, Soraya and Camille; and the family and friends whose lives he touched.
His sons and grandchildren are his legacy. The opportunities they have, the families they have built, and the values they carry forward are the lasting result of a life defined by courage, hard work, sacrifice, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visitation will be Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at the Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ. A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, September 12. 2026 at 12:00pm at Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington, NJ. Entombment immediately following at Holy Cross Mausoleum.
