Luz Marina Barandica died May 8, 2014 at the Shorefront Jewish Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn. She was 95. Born in Placetas, Cuba to Gabriel and Amelia Gonzalez, she lived in Spain before moving to Brooklyn in 1995. Visiting will be on Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home 596 Belgrove Drive Kearny. Mass Tuesday 10:00 a.m. in St. Cecilias Church. Burial will follow at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.
She came to New York in 1953 with her daughter Eva and worked as a seamstress at My Lady and belonged to The I.L.G.W.U. Garment Workers union. In New York she met and married Victor Barandica in 1957. From that union, their daughter Herminia was born. After her husbands death in 1968, she moved to the Basque Country in 1971, where she raised their daughter. She lived in Erandio and Algorta, Bizkaia until her return in 1995 to The U.S.A. She then lived with her eldest daughter in Sheepshead Bay until 2005 when due to illness she moved into Shorefront Jewish Rehabilitation Center, where she lived until her death.
Luz is the wife of the late Victor and is survived by her children and their spouses Eva Rodriguez (Daniel) and Herminia Barandica Hruby (Barry). Sister (and sister in law) of Connie and Peter Tufaro, Queta Gutierrez and the late Emilia, Manuel, Antonio, Dulce Maria, Clara and Jack Fletcher, Maria Herminia and Teddy Norelli, Guillermo, Enrique, Jose Gutierrez and Amelia. Also surviving are her grandchildren Eva, Donna and Daniel along with eight great grandchildren.
