Mae Aitken Young, passed away at the age of 93 with her children at her side on 22 April 2021. Mae was
born on Feb 4, 1928 to James Dixon and Elizabeth Wiebe Aitken at their home in Kearny. She lived in
Kearny all her life until marrying Robert McKenzie Young on March 19, 1949. They lived in Belleville
until purchasing their home in North Arlington where she lived until 1987. A home that welcomed every
family member, friends of every one of her children and served many a plate of meatballs (her specialty)
among many tasty treats. Mae was employed by Bell Telephone for many years and then by AT&T until
her retirement.
Mae was a 50+ year member of The Order of the Eastern Star serving as a Worthy Matron with her
husband as Worthy Patron. Mae also inspired and supported her children to be members of DeMolay
and Rainbow Girls.
Mae was very involved and dedicated to her faith and was an extremely active member of First
Presbyterian Church of North Arlington; serving as Church school teacher then Superintendent, as well
as running the Vacation Bible School for several summers. Mae also served as an Elder with the church,
offering ideas and support in all areas.
After relocating to New Bern, North Carolina, in 1987, Mae continued her church involvement at First
Presbyterian Church of New Bern with the Circle and also in the Fairfield Harbor Chorus. Mae was an
avid golfer, playing several times a week, until her early eighty’s. She thoroughly enjoyed her new
home, old & new friends, gardening and her busy social life. “It was an adult’s playground”.
Mae returned to New Jersey in 2019 to live at Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls. She enjoyed her new
home, and embraced meeting new friends, dining, and social activities and connecting with ‘old’ friends
from New Bern who also reside at Seabrook.
